Graffiti Abatement: Great News!
Our Graffiti Abatement Committee is pleased to report people from
our community are coming forward to volunteer to address the issue
of graffiti. Below are some ideas that are being looked into:
- Involve high school art departments to paint murals on blank
walls in our community.
- Link with School Trustee Judith Bishop to tap into the 40 hours
of volunteer time that high school students require to do before
graduating.
- Link with community organizations. Locke Street Business Association.
- Asking Canada Post to clean or replace mail boxes that have
graffiti.
- Asking stores to restrict sales of spray paint.
- Using lockestreet.com Discussion Board to air suggestions, comments,
etc.
If you would like to help with this issue or find out more, please
visit the discussion
board or email us at NW@lockestreet.com.

Relay For Life
WE NEED YOU
Once again our NW is participating in this great fund raiser for
cancer happening June 21-22, 2002 at the Dofasco Park, on the far
east mountain in Hamilton.
Many from our neighbourhood are already participating and we are
working on our SECOND team of ten.
For more information, please contact Sheila at NW@lockestreet.com
Last years Relay For Life (held overnight from Friday June 22 to
Saturday June 23, 2001 at Dofasco Park) was a great success raising
$110,000 for Cancer charity. Our own Neighbourhood Watch raised
more than $1,200!! This was an all night experience for a very worthwhile
cause.

The Watch In Action
Graffiti is a problem. Paint is the tool.
We are pleased to announce that Steel City Surplus on Dundurn St.
S. recognizes this.
They have initiated a policy to sell spray paint to only those
18 years and older and to locate spray paint in a more visible store
location to help stop theft.
Our Neighborhood Watch congratulates them for this step and hope
that this will help in the eradication of this unsightly bug in
our community.
Division 1 Meeting
Division #1 ( below city west of Sherman) Neighbourhood Watch Meeting
was held on April 16. Greg Doerr, our acting Community Service Officer
was chairing the meeting. Four
neighbourhoodsKirkendall North, Stinson, Ainsle Wood North
and Stathconawere in attendance. Common issues and the process
to address them were discussed (graffiti in all and prostitution
in Stinson).
Greg suggested that the next meeting in June we should discuss
how to increase our membership in Neighbourhood Watch .
Stinson Neighbourhood Watch is holding 3rd Penny Sale on May 2,
2002 doors open at 6 PM at Wilma's Place 380 Main St. East. Proceeds
to area schools. More info 905-572-7779.
I have visited Soccer World at 104 Frid St. They are new to the
area and the good news is they have not had any safety/crime related
issues since opening this March.
Welcome to Craig McQuilkie, the general manager and
Mandi Neely to Kirkendall and if we can be of assistance please
send an e-mail. The facility offers rental and team participation
for soccer, lacrosse, etc. as well as birthday parties etc. They
also just finished using one of the two soccer fields as a driving
range for early spring golfing practice. Pay them a visit and see
their excellent set up.
Thanks for reading another issue of The Watch and for supporting
your Neighbourhood Watch!
Regards,
Richard Palmer,
Assistant Co-ordinator, Kirkendall North Neighbourhood Watch
