* Block Captain Meeting
Wednesday, March 7 7:15 PM at Ryerson Recreation
Centre 251 Duke St.
Guest speaker Craig Hermanson, who is one of our block captains,
will speak about opening the e-mails to all those that are interested
in our Kirkendall area. Please come and give your input.

* Introducing Block Captains
So that we all get to know our block captains on our neighbouring
streets we are considering issuing a copy of all the block captains
to everyone on the list. If you do not want your name, address,
phone or e-mail on the list please
let the NW co-ordinators know what part to remove.
--------------------
Good luck to Frank, one of our block captains on Charlton Ave..
He is going to help family in El Salvador after the devastating
earthquake last month .

If you have not submitted your list of your block, perhaps you could
ask for e-mail addresses so that they can receive the monthly newsletter
etc. See below...

Using E-Mail to Improve Communication
Residents in the neighbourhood have been saying "Not enough is
being done to prevent crime" How can N.W. help?
The executive of our NW has established a partnership with LockeStreet.com
to issue e-mail messages to anyone who is interested in the safety
of our community.
We've had great success in using e-mail to announce meetings, alerts
and news. At present we e-mail 35 Neighbourhood Watch block captains
and 10 other interested Kirkendall residents. With our new LockeStreet.com
partnership we hope to greatly expand this number and help share
important community information.
Block Captains are encouraged to offer these email messages
to residents on their blocks.
----------------------
In February, I had a one on one chat with P.C.Carmen Pietroniro
who is a member of the Hamilton Police and is presently assigned
to our area. Carmen spent 10 years on the Toronto Police Force and
is married with one child. Below are some of the issues he spoke
about.
- The police hope to get new technology that will allow a picture
to be sent to the computer in the police car. This will allow
a quicker way to clarify the identity of a suspect.
- If you are involved with a neighbourhood dispute do not let
the situation escalate into a disturbance. The police can be called
to offer solutions. If it is a property line dispute the City
Hall may have a property survey available that can resolve the
issue. If this still doesn't resolve the issue a Justice of the
Peace at the Court House can assist.
- The warm weather is coming unfortunately so is the Break and
Enter season. Most robberies occur in the day time especially
on a P.D. day. Secure your home by putting bars on concealed basement
windows. Locke your jewelry in a home safe bolted to the floor
and hidden. Consider getting a dog. A home alarm system - a group
purchase would be more reasonable.
