The Canadian Pacific Railway Empress will be visiting our Neighbourhood
The Canadian Pacific Railway Empress Steam Engine will be visiting
our neighbourhood on Monday, June 9, 2003 from 5.30 p.m. to 8:30
p.m. The train will be situated at the CPR yard on Studholme Road,
off of Aberdeen Ave. (at Longwood).
CPR is sponsoring this event to build awareness for “Breakfast
for Learning”.
CPR's 2816 is a class H1b Hudson type locomotive built by Montreal
Locomotive Works in December 1930. CPR Empress is now the only
surviving H1b Hudson and is one of only a handful of preserved
and operating CPR steam locomotives in North America.
For more details, please visit the CPR
Empress web link
Neighbourhood Watch will be having an information table on location
for this event. We are looking for volunteers to help manage our
booth. Contact John Nicholson 905-527-0970 or e-mail at nightwawks@aol.com.
Neighbourhood Watch requires volunteer block captains. Let's make

Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association Annual General Meeting
The Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association has announced the time
and location of the Annual General Meeting.
Kirkendall Neighbourhood Association
Annual General Meeting
Thursday June 12, 2003 at 7PM
Ryerson Recreation Centre
251 Duke Street, Hamilton.
Guest speaker Cathy Erb of the Locke Street Neighbours Group
will speak on the topic 'Locke Street Floods—Six Months
Later'.
Report from Kirkendall South
Our April 28 meeting was reasonably well attended. We had to
compete against the first fine weather of the spring as well as
soccer night at the park. Thanks to Beth Jacob Synagogue for making
their meeting hall available.
Special guest Detective Constable Steve Mahler
of the Hamilton Police Service Street Crimes Unit spoke about
the graffiti problem facing the City.
- Graffiti can be gang or hate related or it can be simple “tagging”.
If you see graffiti that you suspect to be gang or hate related,
call the police and/or your Coordinator.
- If you have a Canada Post mailbox near your front lawn and
wish to remove graffiti from it, Canada Post will make cleaning
supplies available. This applies to both neighbourhoods. Contact
your Coordinator.
- A number of people, including Marvin Caplan Ward One Councillor,
are trying to get the City and’/or the water company to
clean up graffiti in the “Rez” prior to the cycling
races in June. Others have volunteered to help if we have to
do it ourselves. Stay tuned.
Speeding on Aberdeen, and red-light-running at Locke Street continues
to be a concern, especially with children travelling to and from
school.
- In recent weeks, the Police have increased enforcement.
- We are trying to get a red-light camera and/or a crossing
guard at Locke and Aberdeen.
- Please report any related concerns to Scott Gilbey.
Be mindful of the cycling races coming in June and again
in October. The course passes through the neighbourhood,
which means that vehicular access will be limited during the races.
It also means that there will be lots of people visiting the area.
This will be a good time to be extra watchful for all of our neighbours.
There have been reports of night-time parties
taking place in and around the Rez park. If you see campfires
or unruly behaviour, call the police.
The cause to develop a Community Policing Centre
has been taken up by John Nicholson of Kirkendall North. The likely
location will be on Locke Street. John spoke about the need for
volunteers from both neighbourhoods.
Next meeting will be mid summer – t.b.a.

Report from Kirkendall North
At our May 7, 2003 meeting we were pleased to have in attendance
Officer Mel Korda from the Break, Enter,
Auto theft and Recovery Unit
(BEAR Unit), Officer Joanne Serkeyn, both from the Hamilton Police
Services, as well as block captains from Queen St. and Stanley
Ave.
Officer Korda, discussed how homeowners can better protect their
property and possessions. Most break and enters occur during day
light hours including dinner time!!!
These are some suggestions for car and home safety:
- use some type of steering wheel lock such as “The Club”.
- cut bushes around house for better visibility.
- Keep gates locked at all times.
- be a nosey neighbour- call police if suspicious.
- use motion lights.
- lock doors and windows - especially front door when you are
in the back yard
- keep your valuables out of sight.
- Get to know your neigbhours and their routines, know when
they are away (ie: work & vacation), and what vehicles they
drive.
Officer Joanne Serkeyn, our Community Service Officer, is spearheading
the Breakfast For Learning Program in our area and spoke about
the upcoming CPR Empress visit on Monday, June 9, 2003. This steam
train is visiting communities across Canada to raise awareness
of the issue of Canadian children going to school hungry.
Look up Dr. Mustard on the Web for more info or go to this
