Prevention Tips
(Courtesy of Neighbourhood Watch)
Do you know who your neighbours are? The most effective way to
build a strong community is with dedicated people communicating
with each other solving problems.
MAKE THE EFFORT! Become
Acquainted With Your Neighbours and work together to prevent
crime.
Spring has arrived. With spring comes the seasonal door to door
sales pitch “Hi, I just happen to be in the neighbourhood....”.
Take a cautious approach when dealing with these individuals,
check their identification and phone to confirm it is a reputable
company. Be fraud wise.
Alarms should be used in addition to other security measures,
and not be the only security measure. When suspicious activity
is observed please contact the police immediately.
Be sure to protect your bank cards and PIN numbers at the ATM
machines and making purchases while shopping.
Park your vehicle in a well illuminated area. This provides you
with an opportunity to check your vehicle to ensure it is still
secure. Criminals do not like to work under the lights.
With the increase in stolen autos, and thefts, prevention is
the key to reducing the number of victims.
- When suspicious activity is observed please contact the police
immediately.Security devices such as a “club” will
make the culprits work harder.
- Programs such as CAT (Combat Auto Theft) and the Go Transit
program CCAT (Commuters Combat Auto Theft) are vital to identifying
possible stolen vehicle. For further Information on these programs
contact or visit your police station.
Call police immediately to report a crime or suspicious activity,
then contact your block captain. If you don't know who your block
captain is or would like to become part of the Neighbourhood
watch in your area phone police.
Apartment Safety and Security: Criminals do steal vehicles and
enter apartment buildings. Ensure that when a crime has occurred
in your apartment complex, let your superintendent know so they
can inform all the tenants to safe guard their valuables.

Division 1 Meeting
Our Neighbourhood Watch has been recognized as the most active
in the city. Our Community Service Officer Greg Doerr has
suggested that our Watch compile a letter of introduction that
could be given to victims of crime. We think, although this is
a reactive response we do see a benefit and thus are formulating
this letter for use in the future.
Thanks for reading another issue of The Watch and for supporting
your Neighbourhood Watch!
Regards,
Richard Palmer,
Assistant Coordinator, Kirkendall North Neighbourhood Watch
