Neighbourhood Meeting at Ryerson

On Monday June 25 at 7 p.m. a meeting was held at Ryerson Recreation Centre, 200 + attended. I was asked, as a member of Neighbourhood Watch, to be one of the facilitators at this Community Meeting. This meeting was held in response to a physical assault incident in the community involving girls from Ryerson Elementary School. The school and police investigated and responded to the incident. The police also held an assembly for the students to talk about ways to address conflict in a peaceful manner.

The school did not notify the parents and they needed to address their concerns. Many of the students have become afraid to walk to and from school and a large number of their parents attended this meeting. The organisers, parents from the school and people from the area were able to use this
community meeting to express their concerns and look at ways of making our community a safe and happy place.

The discussion groups received a lot of positive suggestions and they will be compiled and made available to the parents.
Obviously the parents felt that Ryerson had not kept them informed and things had gone from bad to worse.

Our Neighbourhood Watch, through the police department, will monitor this situation during the summer and offer help.
